The Surly Pika is not a triathlon or a relay. It is an adventure race in the front-country of Wyoming’s largest mountain range, the Wind River Range. There are two initial race divisions to choose from: a 6-hour course and a 12-hour course. Within each course, teams of 2-3 will receive maps with pre-plotted checkpoints. Teams will make their way by bike, foot, and boat or pack raft through the course to find checkpoints. Routes are not predetermined-racers will choose their own way from checkpoint to checkpoint. Teams do not have to secure all checkpoints to finish the race-this allows experienced racers to be challenged and new racers to create a course within their abilities. However, note that teams will be scored by checkpoints first and time second.
Registered racers will receive updates via email.
The Surly Pika Adventure Race takes place just outside of the town limits of Pinedale, Wyoming, in the front-country of the Wind River Range. The race course varies from year to year, and the route is kept secret until race day.
Teams will make their way by bike, foot, and boat or pack raft through the course to find checkpoints.
Racers must form teams of 2-3 (open/code) in order to participate.

Boats for the paddle sections of Surly Pika must be man-powered-no sails or motors are allowed. If you do not have a boat, the Great Outdoor Shop has a limited number of canoes and kayaks for rent. All boats are required to have the Aquatic Invasive Species sticker available from Wyoming Game and Fish. Boats must be dropped off at the staging area prior to the race start. The boat staging area will be manned starting from 6:00 am on race day for drop-off, or boats may be dropped off the night before as well. Surly Pika Adventure Race nor its agents or volunteers are responsible for damage or theft of boats.
We love our volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering for this race, please fill out the form at the bottom of this page and the race director will be in touch.
We are taking COVID-19 seriously and want to ensure that all our race participants as well as our community, are safe. If necessary we will implement a plan and guidelines in order to keep all involved healthy. More information regarding this will be passed on as race day approaches. For now, please plan to wear a mask when at race headquarters and transition areas, as well as follow social-distancing guidelines. For more information, click here.
